IDF Actions Spark Rising Anti-Israel Sentiment Among Syrian Civilians

Tensions are escalating between Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Syrian civilians in the buffer zone between the two countries, leading to increased anti-Israel sentiment. Recent clashes, particularly a deadly confrontation in Nawa, Daraa province, have intensified the situation.

Key Points:

  • Deadly Clashes: A recent clash in Nawa, triggered by mosque loudspeakers urging residents to confront IDF troops, resulted in casualties and mass funerals with anti-Israel slogans.
  • Increased IDF Activity: Syrian sources report daily IDF patrols, roadblocks, and searches of civilians, including mobile phone inspections.
  • Incidents at Al-Mantra Dam: Residents report being shot at by Israeli troops near Al-Mantra Dam, a key recreational area, with civilians allegedly detained and threatened.
  • Water Dam Seizure Allegation: Israel is accused of seizing Syria's second-largest water dam, impacting agriculture and livestock in Quneitra and Daraa.
  • Shifting Political Landscape: Unrest coincides with a change in Syrian leadership, raising concerns in Israel about the new regime's affiliations.

According to a Syrian source, Israeli forces have increased their presence in Quneitra, allegedly killing livestock, detaining herds, and restricting access to farmland. Residents near Al-Mantra Dam report being repeatedly shot at by Israeli troops, disrupting civilian life.

Dr. Carmit Valensi of the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) noted that these clashes are creating a psychological link for Syrians between casualties in their towns and the war in Gaza.

"Funerals are emotionally unifying events, and they're stoking anti-Israel sentiment," she said. "They're also creating a stronger sense of solidarity with Gaza."

Valensi also highlighted growing criticism of the new Syrian leadership for failing to respond to Israeli actions. She warned that continued Israeli presence without a formal security framework and international guarantees could lead to more violent clashes.

Ongoing Israeli military actions, including road construction, raids, and cross-border operations, are fueling anti-Israel sentiment and potentially pushing the population toward resistance. Some Syrians believe Israel is interested in the country’s disintegration, further deepening tensions.
