The Xbox 360 Marketplace, a staple for gamers for almost 19 years, is set to close its doors today, 29 July. This marks the end of an era for the iconic console, leaving nostalgic players with limited options to add to their digital libraries.
While gamers can still download previously purchased titles, play online (where server support remains), and access backwards-compatible 360 games on Xbox One and Series X|S consoles, direct purchases from the Marketplace will no longer be possible.
"Almost 19 years on, all good things must come to an end," wrote Larry Hryb, a veteran Xbox executive who has been involved with the brand since 2003. Hryb, who played a key role in shaping the Xbox Live community and later served as the Senior Director of Corporate Communications, expressed his gratitude for the years spent sharing "thousands" of marketplace updates with fans.
He added, "It was my pleasure sharing all the thousands of marketplace sales and updates I've given over the years. Thank you for having fun, playing fair, and filing feedback."
While the exact time of the Marketplace closure is not confirmed, time is running out for those wishing to make any last-minute purchases. However, it's worth noting that backwards-compatible 360 games can still be purchased through the newer Xbox consoles, so there's no need to panic buy.
This closure marks a significant milestone in the evolution of gaming, as the Xbox 360 Marketplace played a crucial role in shaping the digital landscape for gamers. As we bid farewell to this era, it's a fitting time to reflect on the incredible games and experiences it delivered.
