Stargazing in the UK: Catch the Perseid Meteor Shower at a 'Star Party'

Get ready to witness the celestial spectacle of the Perseid meteor shower at a special 'star party' hosted by the Madison Astronomical Society this Saturday. Held at Donald County Park, southeast of Mount Horeb, the event promises an evening of stargazing and cosmic wonder.

The free, family-friendly event will feature presentations on meteor showers and planets before the stars appear. Sunset is expected around 8:08pm, so attendees are advised to bring blankets or deckchairs for comfortable viewing.

The star party coincides with the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower, which has been active since July. This celestial event, renowned for its brightness and abundance of meteors, is expected to reach its peak before dawn on Monday.

According to Don Pollacco, an astronomer at the University of Warwick, the shower produces "bright blue meteors — and lots of them." The American Meteor Society forecasts over 50 meteors per hour during the peak, with the shower lasting until 1 September.

What are meteor showers?

These captivating celestial displays are caused by the Earth passing through the debris trail of comets. The Perseids, in particular, originate from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. As these space rocks enter Earth's atmosphere, friction causes them to heat up and glow, leaving behind a fiery tail — the familiar sight of a "shooting star."

These glowing pockets of air, generated by space rocks ranging in size from dust particles to boulders, can be observed in the night sky. NASA's Bill Cooke highlights the Perseids' unique characteristic: "bigger particles than a lot of other showers," creating "bright fireballs" that are easier to spot than many other meteor showers.

How to observe a meteor shower

The best time to witness a meteor shower is typically between midnight and predawn hours. Dark skies, far from city lights, offer optimal viewing conditions. Clear nights with a waning moon are also ideal for maximising visibility.

The Northern Hemisphere provides the best vantage point for the Perseids. However, this year's peak coincides with a moon that is approximately 44% full, which may slightly affect visibility.

When is the next meteor shower?

The American Meteor Society maintains a comprehensive list of upcoming meteor showers, including peak viewing dates and moonlight conditions. The next major meteor shower is the Orionids, expected to peak in mid-October.

Whether you're a seasoned astronomer or simply curious about the wonders of the night sky, the Perseid meteor shower offers a captivating celestial experience. So gather your family, find a dark spot, and prepare to be amazed by the dazzling display of shooting stars.
