JEDEC Releases New Standard for LPDDR5/5X Memory Modules

JEDEC Releases New Standard for LPDDR5/5X Memory Modules

JEDEC, the global standardisation body for the microelectronics industry, has announced the publication of JESD406-5, a new standard for LPDDR5/5X Serial Presence Detect (SPD) contents. This release aligns with the updated content of JESD401-5B, the DDR5 DIMM Label standard, and JESD318, the DDR5/LPDDR5 Compression Attached Memory Module (CAMM2) Common Standard.

The JESD406-5 standard defines the contents of the SPD non-volatile configuration device, found on all JEDEC-compliant memory modules employing LPDDR5/5X SDRAMs, including those utilising the CAMM2 design detailed in JESD318. The JESD401-5B standard, in turn, specifies the content of standard memory module labels, drawing upon the information provided by the other two standards. This comprehensive approach aids end users in selecting compatible memory modules for their applications.

JESD406-5 outlines the content of each byte in the SPD, enabling application software, such as BIOSes, to determine crucial module characteristics. These include capacity, speed, I/O configuration, and content revision level. Rounding algorithms are included within the standard, ensuring optimal performance even when legacy modules are used in newer systems, or vice versa.

The standard supports the various memory module configurations, termed "raw cards", as documented in the JESD401-5B specification. Of particular note is the CAMM2 Raw card E configuration, which defines an LPDDR5/5X module capable of operation as either one or two memory ranks, organised as eight subchannels with a x16 I/O interface. The module design is currently in development and will be made available on the JEDEC website upon completion of system qualification and standard design approval.

Mian Quddus, Chairman of the JEDEC Board of Directors, highlighted the significance of this new standard: "The release of LPDDR5/5X SPD Contents is a crucial step in expanding the market for these components, including their use in notebook computers. Combined with the standards for module base specifications and labels, system designers can be assured of consistent support when integrating LPDDR5 devices into their systems. The detailed algorithms for utilising SPD parameters provide end users with the assurance of optimal performance."
