Hi-Fi Rush Saved: Krafton Acquires Tango Gameworks & IP From Xbox
PUBG developer Krafton has stepped in to acquire Tango Gameworks and the intellectual property rights to its critically acclaimed rhythm action title, Hi-Fi Rush, from Xbox. This acquisition effectively rescues the studio from closure, which was announced by Microsoft in May 2024.
In a press release, Krafton stated its commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for Tango Gameworks, working closely with Xbox and ZeniMax to maintain continuity. The talented team at the studio will continue developing the Hi-Fi Rush IP and explore future projects under Krafton's wing.
"KRAFTON intends to support the Tango Gameworks team to continue its commitment to innovation and delivering fresh and exciting experiences for fans," the statement read. "There will be no impact on the existing game catalog of The Evil Within, The Evil Within 2, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and the original Hi-Fi RUSH game."
The news comes as a welcome relief to fans and developers alike, following the initial shock and dismay surrounding Microsoft's closure announcement. Despite Hi-Fi Rush's success, achieving over two million players within a month of its release and garnering widespread critical acclaim, it wasn't enough to secure its future under Microsoft's stewardship.
The game's vibrant blend of stylish animation, engaging characters, and innovative rhythmic gameplay resonated with audiences and critics alike. In IGN's review, Hi-Fi Rush was awarded a 9/10, praising its "stunning animation, loveable characters, and stylish rhythmic action that are anything but one-note."
While the acquisition marks a positive development for Tango Gameworks and Hi-Fi Rush, the closure of other Bethesda studios remains a cause for concern. The future of game studios in the current industry landscape remains uncertain, highlighting the precarious nature of success in the face of evolving market dynamics.
Krafton's acquisition of Tango Gameworks signals a willingness to invest in talented studios and promising IPs. This move not only secures the future of Hi-Fi Rush but also demonstrates the enduring appeal of creative and innovative game development.
