Google TV Streamer Price Leak: Cheaper Than Apple TV 4K, But Pricier Than Chromecast
Google is reportedly preparing to launch a new streaming device, the Google TV Streamer, aiming to rival the Apple TV 4K. According to French tech publication Dealabs, the Google TV Streamer is set to cost â¬119 in Europe, which translates to approximately £102 or $130. However, considering typical pricing adjustments, the device is likely to be sold for around £129 or $129 in the UK and US respectively.
This pricing strategy positions the Google TV Streamer as a more affordable alternative to the Apple TV 4K, which currently retails for £149 for the standard Wi-Fi model and £149.99 for the model with Ethernet connectivity. However, itâs a significant price increase compared to the Chromecast with Google TV 4K, which is available for £49.
Despite the higher price tag, details surrounding the Google TV Streamerâs features suggest it may not offer a substantial upgrade over the Chromecast with Google TV 4K. While rumours circulate about design changes, an Ethernet port and Threads radio integration, leaked specifications indicate the device may lack Wi-Fi 6 or 7 support. This could explain the lower price point, as the Apple TV 4K includes Wi-Fi 6 support. However, the inclusion of an Ethernet port and a USB port are welcome additions, potentially mitigating the impact of slower speeds due to the lack of Wi-Fi 6 or 7 support.
With the Google TV Streamer priced between the Chromecast with Google TV 4K and the Apple TV 4K, expectations are high for it to offer compelling features justifying the price increase. Users are hoping for enhanced gaming capabilities similar to those found on the Apple TV 4K, smoother app switching, and potentially integration with other Google devices, transforming it into a central hub for the Google ecosystem.
Itâs important to note that the specifications, pricing, and features of the Google TV Streamer are based on rumours and leaks at this stage. The device is expected to make its debut at a Google event scheduled for Tuesday, 13th August, alongside the anticipated release of the Google Pixel 9 series and the latest Pixel Watch 3.
