Google Lens Now Lets You Search with Voice & Images: Is it Worth the Hype?
Google Lens, the image recognition tool, has received a major update, allowing users to incorporate voice recordings into their searches, providing crucial context. This new feature, discovered by tech blog Android Police, adds another layer of functionality to the already powerful app.
The update brings a new "Search with Voice" option to Google Lens. Users can initiate a voice search by holding down the shutter button and speaking their query or question. The spoken words are then transcribed and displayed on the screen, allowing for clarity and confirmation. Google Lens will then use this audio input alongside the image to conduct its search, offering a more comprehensive and nuanced experience.
Mishaal Rahman, an Android expert, demonstrated the feature's capabilities by asking Google Lens to count the number of blueberries on his plate. This request was then processed through Google Search, where the AI-powered Gemini attempted to provide an answer. While the feature showcases the potential for advanced interactions with images, the accuracy of the responses can vary.
Early testing reveals a mixed bag. In some instances, Google Lens, with assistance from Gemini, successfully identified locations to purchase a specific brand of sparkling water or correctly labelled a food item as pico de gallo. However, when tasked with counting the buttons on a PS5 controller, the tool either failed or provided incorrect results.
While the feature shows promise, it's important to note that it's still in its early stages. The update's swift rollout, following hints of its development a month ago by industry insider AssembleDebug on X, showcases Google's rapid implementation of new features.
According to Android Police, the update is a server-side change, meaning it should be readily available on all Android smartphones. If the feature is not yet visible, users are advised to ensure they have the latest updates for Google Search and Lens apps installed on their devices.
As Google Lens continues to evolve, its integration of voice search and image recognition paves the way for a more intuitive and interactive search experience.
