Gamescom Drops Best Nintendo Switch Game Award: Too Few Submissions
The annual gamescom event, set to take place in August 2024, will not feature a dedicated "Best Nintendo Switch Game" award this year. The decision, confirmed by a gamescom spokesperson to TheGamer, comes down to a lack of submissions for the category.
"There were too few submissions for the Best Nintendo Switch category this year," the spokesperson stated. "The award committee, therefore, decided to cancel the category." This marks the first time the Nintendo Switch, which launched in 2017, will not have its own award category at gamescom. In 2023, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom took home the coveted prize, alongside accolades for Best Audio and Best Gameplay.
The news comes as no surprise, considering Nintendo's absence from the physical event this year. In April, Games Wirtschaft, a representative for Nintendo of Europe, announced that Nintendo would not be physically present at gamescom 2024. This decision aligns with the ongoing speculation surrounding Nintendo's next hardware iteration, commonly referred to as the "Switch 2."
While Nintendo has yet to formally unveil its successor to the Switch, the company has indicated that a new console launch is not expected before April 2025.
Despite the absence of a dedicated Nintendo Switch award, gamescom 2024 is still expected to be a major event, featuring the highly anticipated Opening Night Live on August 2024. This showcase will bring a wave of news, reveals, and announcements for the gaming industry.
As gamescom approaches, anticipation builds for the event's lineup, with major industry players expected to make their presence felt. With a focus on the latest and greatest in gaming, gamescom 2024 is set to be a pivotal moment for the gaming world, even without a specific Nintendo award.
