Crash Bandicoot 5 Cancelled: Spyro Crossover Scrapped for Live-Service Games

Activision's focus on live-service titles reportedly led to the cancellation of a planned single-player Crash Bandicoot 5, which would have featured a crossover with fellow platforming icon, Spyro the Dragon.

Gaming historian Liam Robertson, of Did You Know Gaming?, released a video report detailing the behind-the-scenes story at developer Toys For Bob. Robertson alleges that a Crash Bandicoot 5 was in its early stages of development but was scrapped due to Activision's perceived underwhelming sales of Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time – a game that, according to its design director Toby Schadt, sold over five million copies.

Robertson claims that the cancelled Crash Bandicoot 5 was intended to be a direct sequel to its predecessor, building upon its success with classic villain returns, levels set within character psyches, and elements borrowed from 2004's Crash Twinsanity. The game would have also introduced a multiversal threat, bringing both Crash and Spyro together as playable characters in a shared adventure.

The cancellation of this ambitious project came around the same time as Activision's alleged scrapping of a single-player Tony Hawk Pro Skater game. Toys For Bob were subsequently tasked with developing the short-lived multiplayer spin-off, Crash Team Rumble.

Following Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard and a wave of layoffs, Toys For Bob has since become an independent studio. The studio recently announced a deal with its former owners at Xbox to develop a new game, raising hopes for a future Crash or Spyro title, albeit potentially in a different form.

While the future of the beloved platforming franchises remains uncertain, the cancelled Crash Bandicoot 5 serves as a reminder of the shifting landscape within the gaming industry and the increasing focus on live-service games. Fans, however, can still enjoy the current selection of platformers, including the award-winning Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, available now.
