Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, has confirmed that a new Borderlands game is in development and that an announcement is on the horizon. Speaking to GamesRadar+, Pitchford reassured fans that they won't have to wait long to hear more about the project.
"I haven't been great at keeping our many, big projects under wraps," Pitchford admitted. "But I can assure our fans that they'll be very, very happy with the next video game we're working on, and we'll be sharing the news soon."
While Pitchford didn't reveal any specifics about the new game, he did hint that the announcement could arrive before the end of the year. He expressed immense excitement for the project, highlighting the "biggest and best team" he's ever worked with and assuring fans that it's exactly what they want.
The last mainline entry in the Borderlands franchise was *Borderlands 3
in 2019, with two successful spin-offs in 2022: the story-driven *New Tales from the Borderlands* and the fantasy RPG, *Tiny Tina's Wonderlands*. The latter's success, exceeding even the original *Borderlands* in terms of impact, has led to Pitchford hinting at further exploration of the D&D-inspired world.
"We had a bigger impact with the first *Wonderlands
game than the original *Borderlands*, so there's definitely potential to build on that," Pitchford shared. "I'm a huge fantasy fan, which is why we created the *Dragon Keep* DLC for *Borderlands 2*, and many of us at Gearbox share that passion. *Wonderlands* gives us the space to explore fantasy within the Borderlands universe, and I think it's safe to say our fans can expect more of that in the future."
With the *Borderlands
film on the horizon, fans of the franchise have a lot to look forward to. The combination of a new game announcement and the film promises to keep the Borderlands universe thriving for years to come.
