Black Ops 6 Crackdown: New Patch Targets AFK Farming & VPN Abuse

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has implemented significant changes aimed at curbing disruptive player behaviour, focusing primarily on account boosting via AFK farming and the use of VPNs to access alternative servers. These updates, detailed in the latest patch notes, represent a concerted effort by Activision to improve the overall player experience and maintain fair gameplay.

The core of the update centres on enhancing the Ricochet Anti-Cheat system. Improvements have been made to its ability to identify and penalise players who load into matches without actively participating, solely to accumulate experience points (XP). This tactic, often employed to rapidly level up accounts, disrupts team balance and frustrates legitimate players, contributing to a negative gaming environment. The improved detection will help identify and address this behaviour more effectively.

A significant change impacting access to Ranked Play has also been introduced. Players are now required to win 50 standard multiplayer matchmade games before eligibility for Ranked Play is granted. This alteration serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it aims to ensure that players entering Ranked matches possess a minimum level of skill, preventing highly experienced players from creating new accounts and dominating matches against less experienced opponents. Secondly, this requirement provides Ricochet with a valuable dataset of match history for analysis. This expanded data pool allows for a more thorough examination of player behaviour and assists the newly implemented Replay Investigation Tool in identifying and investigating potential rule violations by top-ranked players.

The impact of this update extends beyond Black Ops 6 itself. The patch notes confirm that these anti-cheat enhancements and the Ranked Play requirements will also be implemented in Call of Duty Warzone upon the launch of Season 1. This integrated approach demonstrates Activision's commitment to a consistent and fair competitive environment across its major titles.

The changes are being introduced alongside the launch of Season 1, which includes a new battle pass featuring a controversial parasite skin and a design reminiscent of Rocket Raccoon, as previously reported. Season 1 for both Call of Duty Warzone and Black Ops 6 launched at 5pm BST today.

However, the new season and anti-cheat measures haven't been met with universal acclaim. Eurogamer's review of Black Ops 6 criticised the game for its adherence to a familiar formula, stating: "For a series built on high-octane thrills and explosive gratification, its withdrawal to the well-trodden formula echoes the wider industry's continued allergy to risk," highlighting concerns regarding a lack of innovation despite the efforts to improve player experience through anti-cheat updates. The long-term effectiveness of these changes and their impact on player engagement remain to be seen. The focus on fairer competition, however, is a clear indication of Activision's response to player concerns surrounding disruptive behaviours and the integrity of ranked play.
