Wanderers Stumble in Trophy Opener: Wimbledon Secure 1-0 Victory

Wycombe Wanderers' EFL Trophy campaign got off to a disappointing start on Tuesday evening, falling to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Wimbledon at Plough Lane.

The Chairboys, who reached the final of the competition last season, fielded a strong starting XI in South London, with manager Matt Bloomfield seeking to build on their impressive start to the League One season. Notable inclusions in the line-up included Alex Hartridge, returning from suspension, and Sam Vokes, who has bagged two goals in two league games.

The first half saw Wycombe start brightly, with Treeeq Bakinson firing two early attempts over the crossbar. Sam Vokes and Jason McCarthy also tested the Wimbledon goal, but debutant goalkeeper Lewis Ward proved a formidable obstacle. McCarthy, making his first start of the season, created a number of dangerous chances, but his crosses were thwarted by the Dons' defence.

At the other end, James Tilley and Joe Piggot posed a threat for Wimbledon, but neither managed to truly test Wycombe goalkeeper Franco Ravizzoli.

The second half witnessed a significant improvement in Wycombe's performance, with the visitors creating a plethora of opportunities to take the lead. Vokes’ long-range effort was tipped over the bar by Ward, while Kieran Sadlier came agonisingly close on three occasions, including a free-kick that was blocked off the line.

However, the turning point of the match arrived in the closing stages, when a golden opportunity was squandered by Wycombe. Richard Kone, presented with a clear sight of goal from just six yards out, inexplicably fired his shot wide.

Wimbledon capitalised on the missed chance. From the ensuing goal kick, substitute Omar Bugiel slotted home from close range, giving the Dons the lead and ultimately securing the victory.

The result extends Wimbledon's dominance over Wycombe in recent times. Since reforming in 2002, the Dons have won eight of the 17 meetings between the two clubs. For Wycombe, the defeat represents their third in four games.

The Chairboys now turn their attention to League One, where they host Rotherham United on August 24th.
