Fede Valverde and Dani Carvajal, alongside manager Carlo Ancelotti, addressed the media ahead of Real Madrid's clash with Atalanta on Wednesday. Valverde, now sporting the coveted number 8 jersey previously worn by Toni Kroos, expressed his admiration for the German midfielder.
"We all know what Kroos represents," Valverde stated. "I've admired him all my life. Every piece of advice from him is an honour. Wearing his number is a tremendous source of pride, for me and my family. Iâll do my best to live up to this number and keep contributing as a player and as a person."
He acknowledged the absence of Kroos, "Itâs a shame we can't share conversations with him anymore, but life goes on."
Valverde also shared his experience training with newly-signed Kylian Mbappe, "I had a couple of training sessions with him. He's one of the best in the world, highly motivated, and he's going to make a huge impact at this club."
When asked about his role this season, Valverde highlighted his willingness to adapt, "I need to be ready for whatever the manager needs. I have to keep growing and working hard."
He also echoed Carvajal's concerns regarding the demanding fixture list, "I agree with Dani. We have to travel 12 hours to America, and this year weâve trained far less. We give it our all, but sometimes our bodies just can't keep up. It gets complicated."
Carvajal, known for his consistency and commitment, was also candid about the gruelling schedule, "It doesn't make any sense. It's impossible to maintain an optimal level. With the Intercontinental Cup, the Club World Cup, and FIFA dates in between, it's impossible to play 72 games. The relevant authorities should analyse this. It's us and our families who are suffering."
He added a touch of humour when discussing Mbappe, "I've had to suffer against him a few times, but he'll help us have a great season."
When asked if he deserves the Ballon d'Or, Carvajal remained grounded, "I enjoyed last season both collectively and individually. For me, the collective is most important, but winning an individual title is definitely exciting."
Concluding on a positive note, Carvajal emphasized their eagerness for the upcoming season, "We face it with huge enthusiasm and great desire. Tomorrow we have an important challenge against a formidable opponent."
The press conference highlighted Real Madrid's ambition for the season while also raising concerns about the demanding schedule that could potentially hinder their performance. With a talented squad and a determined manager, Real Madrid will be hoping to overcome these challenges and achieve success on both the domestic and international stage.
