Jaiane Oliveira, a professional cyclist and mother of two, was tragically killed during a race in Baianópolis, Brazil, last Sunday. The incident occurred just moments before she reached the finish line, in a horrific accident that has shocked the cycling community.
Oliveira, in her 30s, was involved in a collision with another cyclist. The impact sent her into a sound truck parked beside the track, causing one of the speakers to dislodge and fall onto her. Horrified onlookers rushed to her aid, attempting to remove the speaker and administer first aid, but sadly their efforts were unsuccessful.
Paramedics were called to the scene and transported Oliveira to the hospital with severe head injuries. However, she succumbed to her injuries and was later pronounced dead.
The organisers of the event, Dubai Bikers, expressed their deep sorrow and condolences on social media. They described Oliveira as a "special person" whose loss leaves a "deep void in our hearts." They offered their condolences to her family and expressed hope that her memories and legacy would provide them with comfort and strength during this difficult time.
A second cyclist involved in the accident was thrown from their bike, but was able to recover and finish the race. Footage of the accident, much of which has not been released to the public, captured the horrific moment of the crash.
Local police are currently investigating the incident. The sound truck involved in the crash was reported to be missing from the scene after the accident, as revealed by NeedToKnow.
Oliveira leaves behind her husband, who also participated in the cycling competition that weekend, and her two young twin sons. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with competitive sports and the importance of ensuring adequate safety measures are in place.
