St. Andrews: Where Stacy Lewis Made History, And Aims For More

Stacy Lewis returns to the Old Course, the site of her memorable 2013 Women's Open triumph, hoping for more success at the iconic venue.

St. Andrews holds a special place in Stacy Lewis's golfing heart. It was on the hallowed grounds of the Old Course where she achieved one of her most memorable victories – the 2013 Women's Open. Her victory was sealed with a remarkable shot on the 17th hole, a 5-iron that landed on the green, a moment she describes as "the best golf shot of my career."

Lewis's triumph was a testament to her resilience and composure under pressure. Facing a five-shot deficit after 36 holes, she fought back, carding a 3-under 69 to narrow the gap. In a dramatic finish, she birdied the 17th and 18th holes to secure the title, with a final score of 8 under.

The pressure of the 17th hole was immense, as Lewis explained, "On that hole you're trying to get it down to the bottom of the hill, and if it bounces up, great, and if it doesn't, you two-putt, and you get out of there." Thankfully, her shot bounced perfectly, landing just a couple of feet from the hole, a moment she knew "was going to be good."

St. Andrews has been a site of triumph for Lewis on multiple occasions. In 2008, she represented the US in the Curtis Cup, winning all five of her matches. Her performance in the opening round was particularly memorable, as she overcame a poor tee shot to secure a vital par.

While Lewis's achievements on the Old Course are significant, it's the celebratory moments that stand out most for her. She fondly recalls celebrating both victories at the Dunvegan, the historic hotel and pub where she and her family stay during their visits.

"This is probably one of my favorite places in the world to be," Lewis said. "Obviously because of the success but just love the history of the game and this golf course and this place."

As Lewis returns to St. Andrews for what is likely her final Women's Open at the iconic venue, she will be looking to add another chapter to her history with the Old Course.
