Southend's Home Advantage: Can They Sink Boston?
Southend United will be looking to secure their first win of the National League season on Tuesday, as they welcome Boston United to Roots Hall for their third fixture.
The Shrimpers, currently 17th with two points from two draws, will be hoping to take advantage of a struggling Boston side that sits bottom of the table after two heavy defeats.
A Disappointing Start for Southend
Southend's opening two games have been a mixed bag. They began with a frustrating 1-1 draw against York City, having led for the majority of the match before conceding late on. Their second game, against Hartlepool United, ended in a goalless stalemate despite Hartlepool having a player sent off in the second half.
Manager Kevin Maher, while acknowledging the positives, will be keen to see his side convert more of their chances. Despite missing out on the play-offs by a narrow margin last season, Southend have been particularly poor at home, winning just two of their last seven league games at Roots Hall.
Boston's Struggles in the National League
Boston United's entry into the National League has been far from smooth. They have conceded seven goals without scoring in their opening two matches, highlighting a weakness in both their defence and attack.
Their 3-0 defeat to Rochdale on August 10th was followed by a 4-0 loss to Forest Green Rovers on August 17th. This latter defeat was particularly disheartening as they missed a penalty in the 90th minute.
Manager Ian Culverhouse admitted that, while he was pleased with his team's possession, the goals conceded were "comical" and that the team faces a long season if they don't address their defensive frailties.
Team News and Potential Lineups
Southend could opt for an extra midfielder instead of their usual three centre-backs, with Noor Husin potentially replacing Joseph Gubbins in the starting XI.
Boston, meanwhile, may look to strengthen their defence with Tom Leak starting. Zak Mills, Mitchell Roberts, and Cameron Green could join him at the back.
Possible Starting Lineups:
Southend United: Andeng-Ndi; Scott-Morriss, Taylor, Kensdale, Ralph; Coker, Miley, Husin; Walker, Cardwell, Bridge
Boston United: Gregory; Mills, Leak, Roberts, Green; Richards, Woods; Rowe, Mooney, Weston; Aderoju
Prediction: Southend United 2-0 Boston United
Despite a disappointing start, Southend's home advantage and their recent defensive solidity suggest they could keep a clean sheet against a struggling Boston side. Although Boston have earned their place in the National League, they are still adapting to the division and will likely face an uphill battle against a more experienced Southend side.
