Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz will join Williams Racing in 2025, bringing an end to months of speculation surrounding his future.
The Spanish driver has signed a multi-year deal with the Grove-based team, meaning he will partner Alex Albon for the 2025 season. The agreement guarantees Sainz a place at Williams for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, with an option for a third year.
This move marks the end of American driver Logan Sargeant's time with Williams, with his future in Formula One uncertain beyond the current season. Sainz's decision comes after Ferrari announced the signing of Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season, leaving Sainz's future in doubt.
"I am very pleased to announce that I will be joining Williams Racing from 2025 onwards," said Sainz. "This year's driver market has been particularly complex, and it's taken me some time to make this decision. However, I am certain that Williams is the right place for me to continue my Formula One journey."
"I am incredibly proud to join such a historic and successful team," he continued. "Many of my childhood heroes raced for Williams and made their mark on our sport. The ultimate goal of returning Williams to the front of the grid is a challenge I welcome with enthusiasm. I believe this team has everything it takes to make history again, and from January 1st, I will dedicate my utmost effort to driving Williams forward alongside every team member."
Sainz has won three Formula One races, including this year's Australian Grand Prix. His arrival at Williams is seen as a significant boost for the team, who have been struggling to achieve consistent results in recent seasons.
Williams Team Principal, James Vowles, expressed his excitement about the signing: "Carlos joining Williams is a strong statement of intent from both parties. Carlos has repeatedly proven himself to be one of the most talented drivers on the grid, with a proven ability to win races. This signing underscores the upward trajectory we are on."
"Carlos brings not only experience and performance but also a relentless drive to extract every last millisecond from the team and the car; it's a perfect fit," he added. "With Alex and Carlos, we will have one of the most formidable driver line-ups on the grid, with a wealth of experience to guide us into the new regulations for 2026."
"Their faith in our team's mission highlights the significant work taking place behind the scenes. There should be no doubt about our ambitions and momentum as we continue our journey back to competitiveness. We are here, we are committed, and with Dorilton's support, we are investing in everything it takes to return to the front of the grid," Vowles concluded.
"I also want to express my gratitude to Logan for everything he has done for the team. I know he will continue to fight hard for us in the races ahead."
Sainz's arrival is a significant coup for Williams, who hope to leverage his experience and talent to close the gap on the front-running teams and return to their former glory days.
