Roma Held to Goalless Draw in Season Opener, Dybala's Future Uncertain
Despite a frustrating goalless draw in their Serie A season opener against Cagliari, Roma's performance was overshadowed by the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of Paulo Dybala. The Argentine forward, who was Roma's top scorer and assist-maker last season, sat on the bench in Sardinia as speculation about his potential move to Saudi Arabia continues to swirl.
With Dybala's future in limbo, manager Daniele De Rossi was forced to field a new-look Roma side, featuring summer signings MatÃas Soulé, Artem Dovbyk, and Enzo Le Fée. Despite the excitement surrounding the new arrivals, the Giallorossi struggled to break down a resolute Cagliari defence.
Roma's lack of creativity was evident throughout the first half, as they managed just three shots on goal in the opening 30 minutes. Soulé, who was expected to be a key player in Roma's attack, was repeatedly stifled by the Sardinian side's tight marking.
The second half saw an improvement from Roma, with the team appearing more organised and fluid. Soulé had an early chance, while Nicola Zalewski, who impressed on the left flank, set up a chance for Lorenzo Pellegrini, but the Italian midfielder's effort was weak.
De Rossi made several substitutions, introducing Tommaso Baldanzi and, eventually, Paulo Dybala in the 69th minute. Dybala's arrival sparked a brief flurry of activity, with the forward almost immediately drawing a free-kick and then creating a chance for Dovbyk.
However, despite Dybala's involvement, Roma were unable to find a way through. Cagliari, on the other hand, also had their chances, hitting the post in the 81st minute. Pellegrini would later find the back of the net, but his goal was ruled offside.
Ultimately, the match ended in a disappointing goalless draw. While Roma will be hoping to see Dybala remain at the club, his future remains shrouded in uncertainty.
The Giallorossi will now look to bounce back from this disappointing start when they host Empoli on August 25th.
