Paralympics 2024: Shuker & Bywater to Lead Team GB in Paris
Two experienced Paralympians, Lucy Shuker and Terry Bywater, have been selected as the flagbearers for Team GB at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The honour, chosen by a vote of their fellow athletes, recognises their commitment to the Paralympic movement and their dedication to their respective sports.
Shuker, a wheelchair tennis player from Fleet, Hampshire, expressed her overwhelming joy and gratitude at being chosen. "It's an incredible honour," she said. "When I was asked to be put forward, I thought that's as good as it gets. But when I found out a couple of days ago, it's mindblowing."
The selection carries particular significance for Shuker, as she becomes the first wheelchair tennis player to carry the flag for GB since Pete Norfolk at London 2012. She acknowledged the role Norfolk played in her early career, lending her a wheelchair to start her tennis journey. "To be following in his footsteps is a privilege," she stated.
Bywater, a wheelchair basketball player, also expressed his profound honour at being selected. "It's an incredible privilege to be chosen to represent Team GB as flagbearer," he said. "To be able to lead the team out at the opening ceremony is a dream come true."
The choice of Shuker and Bywater as flagbearers highlights the diversity and inclusivity of the Paralympic movement. Penny Briscoe, ParalympicsGB chef de mission for Paris 2024, emphasised the significance of their selection. "Their selection â which was voted for by their team-mates â underlines just how much both athletes epitomise the Paralympic values that we as a team are so proud of," she said.
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will take place from 28 August to 8 September. Shuker and Bywater will lead a team of over 100 athletes aiming to achieve success and inspire the nation. As flagbearers, they will embody the spirit of the Paralympic Games, showcasing the power of sport to break barriers and create a more inclusive world.
