Newcastle Set for Windfall as Toney's Saudi Move Nears
Newcastle United are poised for a substantial financial boost in the closing stages of the summer transfer window, thanks to a lucrative sell-on clause attached to the sale of Ivan Toney.
Back in 2018, when the Magpies offloaded the forward to Peterborough United, they negotiated a deal that would see them receive 30% of any future profit from his sale. This clause proved beneficial when Toney moved to Brentford in 2020, and it's now set to generate further income for Newcastle as the striker appears on the verge of a transfer to Saudi Arabia.
Peterborough United chairman, Barry MacAnthony, shed light on the details of the agreement during his "Hard Truth" podcast earlier this year. He revealed that Newcastle were initially hesitant to sell Toney permanently, preferring a loan deal. However, Peterborough's refusal to loan strikers prompted them to offer Newcastle a share of any future transfer fee as an incentive.
"They agreed and they wanted 50% of any future transfer profit," MacAnthony disclosed. "That was never going to happen as we were paying a fee for Ivan as well, so we settled on 30%. We paid Newcastle a transfer fee of £350,000 spread over three years."
MacAnthony further explained that Peterborough have already received £10 million from Brentford for Toney's transfer and will receive a portion of any further profit, with Newcastle earning 30% of their share.
"We earn money every time Ivan moves and so do Newcastle," he stated. "Thatâs how these deals are structured and Iâm all for it. Itâs like a chain reaction and itâs the best thing."
Toney's future remains uncertain, with the 28-year-old yet to feature for Brentford this season. A £35 million bid from Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia was rejected, but reports suggest a deal could be finalised in the coming days. Brentford manager Thomas Frank acknowledged the speculation surrounding Toney's future, stating, "We find out on Friday. We will know something on Friday. Everything could be done on Friday."
The forward's contract with Brentford expires at the end of the current season, and he has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs in recent months, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United. However, it appears that a move to Saudi Arabia is the most likely outcome, potentially generating a substantial windfall for both Brentford and Newcastle United.
Should this transfer materialise, Newcastle will receive a significant financial boost, further solidifying their commitment to strengthening their squad and challenging for honours in the Premier League.
