Middlesbrough secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over a lacklustre Leeds United in the first round of the Carabao Cup, sending a clear message of their intent for the new season.
The match, played at Elland Road, saw Middlesbrough take control in the second half, scoring three goals in a dominant display that left Leeds struggling to find their rhythm. Anfernee Dijksteel broke the deadlock early in the second period, cutting inside from the right flank before curling a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.
Leeds, who had already endured a disappointing start to the season with a 3-3 draw against Portsmouth in their opening league fixture, looked disjointed and were unable to mount any meaningful response. Middlesbrough doubled their lead just after the hour mark, with Josh Coburn's defence-splitting pass finding Delano Burgzorg, who coolly slotted past Karl Darlow.
Coburn completed a fine individual performance by adding a third goal in the 67th minute, tapping in from close range after Isaiah Jones' deflected shot fell invitingly into his path.
Despite five second-half substitutions, Leeds failed to find a way back into the game, with their best chance coming late on when Georginio Rutter hit the post and Joël Piroe headed the rebound wide.
Elsewhere in the first round, Sheffield Wednesday secured a 2-1 victory over Hull City thanks to a brace from Charlie McNeill on his debut for the Owls. McNeill's goals, both scored within the opening 10 minutes, helped Wednesday overcome an early equaliser from Marvin Mehlem.
The draw for the second round has thrown up some intriguing clashes, with Newcastle United set to travel to Nottingham Forest in an all-Premier League encounter. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney's Plymouth Argyle will face a trip to Watford.
