Manx Grand Prix Rider Dies in Qualifying Crash
A rider has tragically lost his life following a crash during the opening qualifying session of the 2024 Manx Grand Prix. Louis OâRegan, a 43-year-old competitor from Didcot, England, succumbed to his injuries after an incident at Kateâs Cottage on the mountain section of the 37.73-mile (60km) course. The accident occurred at approximately 4:50pm BST.
OâRegan, an Irish national, made his debut at the Manx Grand Prix in 2013, finishing 12th in the Newcomers A Race. He was a well-respected and experienced competitor, having set his personal best lap speed of 114.7mph in the 2019 Junior Race.
Following the incident, the opening qualifying session was immediately red-flagged and not restarted. The organisers of the Manx Grand Prix issued a statement expressing their deep sadness and extending their heartfelt condolences to OâRegan's partner Sarah, his family, loved ones, and friends.
The news of OâRegan's death has cast a shadow over the event, a popular and demanding motorcycle road race held annually on the Isle of Man. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with this high-speed motorsport.
The Manx Grand Prix organisers are expected to make further announcements in due course, as investigations into the accident continue.
