Ipswich Town have agreed a fee with Blackburn Rovers for the transfer of striker Sammie Szmodics, in a deal that could reach £11 million.
The two clubs have been locked in negotiations for over six weeks, with Ipswich finally securing the signature of the Championship's top scorer from last season. After multiple bids were rejected by Blackburn, a breakthrough was reached this week. BBC Sport understands that a fee of £9 million, plus potential add-on bonuses, has been agreed, and Szmodics is set to undergo a medical in Suffolk.
The protracted negotiations were a result of differing valuations between the two clubs. Blackburn's initial asking price for Szmodics, exceeding £15 million, was deemed too high by Ipswich. However, a compromise was eventually found, paving the way for the 27-goal forward's move to Portman Road.
Szmodics' arrival is a major boost for Ipswich as they prepare for their return to the Premier League after a four-year absence. The Tractor Boys will be hoping that the prolific striker can replicate his Championship form on the biggest stage, adding firepower to a squad that is already being bolstered by the arrival of other new players.
On Thursday, the club confirmed that England international Kalvin Phillips is poised to join on a season-long loan from reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.
With these two key additions to their ranks, Ipswich are putting together a strong squad for their Premier League return, with high hopes for a successful campaign in the top flight.
