Inter Must Raise Their Game, Atalanta No Longer Underdogs
Inter Milan President Beppe Marotta has acknowledged Atalanta's rise to prominence, stating that they are "no longer to be considered outsiders" in Italian and European football. He also highlighted the need for Inter to show even greater determination this season if they are to maintain their title-winning form.
The two sides clash at the San Siro on Saturday evening, with the reigning Serie A champions looking to bounce back from a disappointing opening day draw against Genoa. Inter were impressive in their subsequent victory over Lecce, with Lautaro Martinez returning from injury to feature alongside Marcus Thuram in the starting XI.
Marotta, speaking to DAZN, praised Atalanta's remarkable transformation under Gian Piero Gasperini, highlighting the club's recent success both domestically and on the European stage. "Since the Percassi family took charge, they have reached the highest level thanks also to a very smart coach like Gian Piero Gasperini," he said. "Combining the coach, a squad and club has allowed Atalanta to become a reality of our football and that of Europe too."
Inter themselves have enjoyed a busy summer transfer window, securing the signings of Piotr Zielinski, Mehdi Taremi, and Josep Martinez, while also completing the arrival of defender Tomas Palacios from Independiente Rivadavia on deadline day.
Despite a change in ownership, with Oaktree Capital Management taking control from Suning, Marotta has been promoted from CEO to President, ensuring continuity in the club's management structure.
"Winning is difficult, but repeating that victory is even tougher," he acknowledged. "Mentality counts for a lot and every match will be more difficult than it was last season, the opponents will have extra motivation and therefore we must too."
Marotta remained confident in Inter's ability to overcome the challenges ahead, highlighting the strength of the club's leadership and coaching staff. "We are a solid group behind the scenes," he said. "I have excellent collaborators like Ausilio, Baccin and vice president Zanetti, along with Simone Inzaghi and his staff. All this can allow us to face the challenges of the new season."
The clash between Inter and Atalanta promises to be a captivating encounter, with both sides eager to make a statement early in the season. Inter will be looking to assert their dominance, while Atalanta will be aiming to prove that they can compete with the very best in Italian football.
