Haaland Strikes Early: Chelsea 0-1 Man City
Manchester City opened their Premier League campaign with a familiarly dominant performance, defeating Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to an early goal from Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian striker, who scored a record-breaking 52 goals in all competitions last season, was back to his prolific best, netting in the 18th minute. A slick move involving a clever touch from Bernardo Silva sent Haaland clear, and he coolly lifted the ball over the onrushing Kepa Arrizabalaga.
City, who are aiming for a record-extending fifth consecutive Premier League title, looked sharp throughout the first half. They pressed high, controlled possession, and carved out numerous chances. Chelsea, under their new manager Enzo Maresca, struggled to cope with City's intensity and struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities of their own.
The Blues, who have undergone a period of significant change and upheaval in recent seasons, looked disjointed in the early stages. They were without their summer signing Pedro Neto, who was named on the bench, while Raheem Sterling was left out of the squad altogether.
"My advice is to give him [Maresca] time and it will work," said Pep Guardiola, who previously worked with Maresca at City. "All managers need time. I don't know if Chelsea is the place to do this, but it will work if they give him time. This is my feeling."
Despite a late surge in the second half, Chelsea were unable to find a way past Ederson. The victory for City will do little to quell their insatiable desire for silverware, while Chelsea face a significant task to turn their fortunes around under Maresca.
The match was also notable for the impressive debut of City's new signing Savinho, who started in attack and caused Chelsea problems with his directness and flair. The Brazilian youngster looks like another astute acquisition for the Sky Blues, who have a reputation for unearthing hidden gems.
The game was not short of entertainment, with both sides playing with intensity and commitment. But City's quality ultimately shone through. They showed why they are considered the team to beat in the Premier League, while Chelsea are still very much a work in progress.
