Plymouth Argyle secured their first victory of the season and handed Wayne Rooney his first win in seven competitive matches as manager, defeating Cheltenham Town 3-0 in the first round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.
The victory at Home Park was a much-needed boost for the Pilgrims, following a disappointing 4-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday. Goals from Ben Waine, Ryan Hardie, and Mustapha Bundu were enough to secure a comfortable win and a place in the second round of the competition.
Cheltenham, who had looked dangerous in the first half, were unable to capitalise on their early opportunities. A rebound off the post and the home goalkeeper, Conor Hazard, from Ethon Archer's strike had threatened to give the Robins the lead. However, Plymouth's resolute defence and clinical finishing proved to be the difference in the end.
Rooney, who took charge of the Pilgrims earlier this year, was visibly delighted with his team's performance. He celebrated with his players and acknowledged the vociferous support from the home crowd, who chanted his name and let off fireworks in the distance.
The result will be a huge confidence boost for Plymouth as they look to climb the League One table. They will be hoping to carry this momentum into their upcoming league fixture against Lincoln City at the weekend. The draw for the second round of the EFL Cup will be held shortly.
