Former Celtic hero Brian McClair has thrown his weight behind a potential move for Ryan Porteous, suggesting the defender could bolster the Hoops' backline despite a difficult Euro 2024 campaign. McClair believes the 25-year-old, who recently joined Watford, could provide valuable competition for the starting centre-back spots currently occupied by Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales.
The ex-Manchester United legend's comments come as Celtic continue to assess their defensive options, particularly in light of potential departures for fringe players such as Gustaf Lagerbielke, Maik Nawrocki, and Yuki Kobayashi. McClair, speaking exclusively to Football Scotland, highlighted the need for squad depth across all positions, including at left-back and centre-half.
While Porteous' performance at the Euros may have raised concerns, McClair remains confident in the player's ability, comparing him to Carter-Vickers in terms of playing style. He believes the former Hibernian player could challenge the current first-choice centre-backs and bring a more physical presence to the team.
McClair's transfer wishlist also includes Dundee captain Luke McCowan, a midfielder who impressed in the Scottish Premiership last season, helping the Dees secure a top-six finish. The 20-year-old has attracted interest from both Hibernian and Wigan Athletic, but McClair believes McCowan's talent and potential make him an ideal fit for Celtic.
"Someone who I think that Celtic should be interested in, whether Matt O'Riley decides he's going to be somewhere else or not, is Luke McCowan of Dundee," McClair stated. "I like him, I think he's the type of player who would flourish at Celtic. He's got the right characteristics to be a Celtic player."
The former Celtic striker's recommendations come as the club is actively considering potential replacements for Matt O'Riley, who is attracting interest from several Premier League teams. If the midfielder departs for a significant fee, Celtic's focus will shift to securing replacements who can maintain the club's high standards.
McClair's insights offer a fascinating glimpse into the potential transfer landscape at Parkhead. While Celtic's squad already boasts strong talent, the former striker's suggestions highlight the club's ambition to further enhance their depth and competitiveness for the upcoming season.
