Barton Trial Set for Offensive Posts: Ex-Footballer Faces May Court Date
Former footballer Joey Barton will stand trial in May 2024, accused of sending offensive messages to ex-England footballer Eni Aluko. The 41-year-old pleaded not guilty to a charge of conveying an indecent or offensive message, with intent to cause distress or anxiety, at Liverpool Crown Court.
The charge stems from alleged posts on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) between 3 and 8 January. The posts, allegedly originating from Barton's account, are said to have targeted Aluko.
Recorder of Liverpool Andrew Menary KC set a three-day trial for 19 May next year. During the brief hearing, Barton, who appeared in a dark checked jacket with shirt and tie, confirmed his identity and date of birth. He was granted bail on the condition that he refrain from mentioning Aluko on any social media platform.
The hearing, which lasted around 10 minutes, focused on administrative matters ahead of the trial.
Aluko, known for her career at Chelsea and England, scored 33 goals in 102 international appearances before retiring in 2020. Since then, she has built a successful career as a broadcaster.
Barton, who played for clubs such as Manchester City and Newcastle, was dismissed as manager of League One side Bristol Rovers last October after a string of poor results. He had held the position for almost three years.
