AC Milan Sweat on Pulisic Ahead of Serie A Opener

With the 2024/25 Serie A season kicking off this weekend, AC Milan are facing a potential headache as they prepare for their opening clash against Torino on Saturday. USMNT captain Christian Pulisic, a key player for the Rossoneri, has sustained an ankle knock, raising concerns about his availability for the crucial fixture.

Pulisic was noticeably absent from Milan's Berlusconi Trophy match against Monza on Tuesday, a decision attributed to the club's priority of ensuring the American is fully fit for the Serie A campaign. While reports suggest a chance of his return at the San Siro this weekend, Milan are taking a cautious approach to his recovery, preferring not to risk further injury.

The former Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund star is expected to be a key figure for the seven-time European champions under new manager Paulo Fonseca, having impressed in his debut season in Italy last year. He netted 15 goals and provided 11 assists across all competitions for Milan, proving his worth to the team.

Pulisic's recent performance in Milan's final pre-season encounter against Barcelona further highlighted his importance. He delivered a standout display, contributing both a goal and an assist in the 2-2 draw.

Fonseca has been particularly impressed with Pulisic's versatility and intelligence, stating that the American can operate effectively in any attacking position. “Pulisic played as a number 10,” explained Fonseca. “In the second half, we started without a striker, we played with two number 10s, Pulisic and Loftus-Cheek. He's a very intelligent player, I like to see him more involved in that position (in a central role)."

While Pulisic's absence would be a significant blow to Milan's plans for the new season, the club remains hopeful he will recover in time for their Serie A opener. However, the extent of his ankle injury and the urgency to ensure his long-term fitness could potentially lead to a late decision on his participation against Torino.
