The GTA 5 Story You Were Never Allowed to Play.
  • Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has officially confirmed that a single-player DLC for Grand Theft Auto 5 starring Trevor was canceled.
  • The expansion, which would have featured Trevor as an undercover secret agent, was approximately halfway complete before being abandoned.
  • Houser revealed the project was shelved to allocate resources to the development of Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • The confirmation puts an end to years of speculation fueled by actors and former developers.

Rockstar Co-Founder Breaks Silence on Canceled Trevor DLC

For years, Grand Theft Auto fans have circulated rumors about a canceled single-player DLC for GTA 5. Now, in a revealing interview on the Lex Fridman podcast, Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has confirmed the story, explaining for the first time why the fabled "Agent Trevor" expansion never saw the light of day.

“The internet knows we made a DLC… single-player DLC for GTA 5 that never came out,” Houser admitted. “It was one when you played as Trevor, but he was a secret agent. It was cute."

The "James Bond Trevor" That Never Was

Houser elaborated that the project was significantly underway before being cut. “It never quite came together, and it was never finished. It was about half done when it got abandoned," he stated. The primary reason for its cancellation wasn't a lack of quality, but a strategic shift in focus. "But I think if that had come out, we probably wouldn’t have gotten to make Red Dead 2. So, there are always compromises.”

Years of Rumors Finally Confirmed

Houser's admission validates claims made by those close to the project. Voice actor Steven Ogg, who portrayed Trevor, previously discussed the DLC in a Q&A session, describing a scenario where "Trevor was gonna be undercover, he works for the FEDs... we did shoot some of that stuff with James Bond Trevor."

Additionally, former Rockstar developer Joe Robino had called the canceled DLC "kick ass" and suggested its cancellation was tied to the immense financial success of GTA Online, which made a standalone story expansion a lower priority.

Houser on Single-Player and a GTA Zombies Game

Despite the cancellation, Houser expressed his personal fondness for single-player expansions, citing the DLC for GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption as beloved models. “I like single-player DLC. I just think the audience loves it, and it’s really fun to make,” he said, adding that he hopes to create similar content with his new company, Absurd Ventures.

In another surprising revelation, Houser mentioned another canceled concept that would have excited fans: a GTA Zombies game. “I liked the idea of it, it was a GTA zombie game,” he mused. “That would have been funny. I think that could have been quite fun.”
