Walk & Golf for Parkinson's: Suffolk Community Honors Loved Ones

A recent event in Suffolk, England, brought together nearly 200 people to raise funds for Parkinson's UK, celebrating the lives of those affected by the disease and supporting vital research.

On a recent Sunday, the Ickworth Estate near Bury St Edmunds hosted the "Walk for Parkinson's", attracting walkers of all ages and abilities. Participants chose from two routes: a leisurely two-mile stroll or a more challenging 5.7-mile walk through the picturesque National Trust property.

The event was not only about physical activity but also about remembrance. Attendees had the opportunity to write the names of loved ones impacted by Parkinson's on paper hearts, which were then displayed on a giant washing line, creating a poignant and heartwarming visual tribute.

Rhiain Grummet, who participated with her grandfather, spoke about the importance of the event, saying, "My grandad expressed a desire to take part, so as a family, we chose to support him and join in."

She further emphasized the impact of Parkinson's, stating, "We have seen the impact the condition can really have on people’s lives." Despite the challenges, Rhiain's grandfather, a testament to the resilience of those living with Parkinson's, impressed everyone by keeping up a "fantastic pace the whole way," refusing any rest.

The "Walk for Parkinson's" was a resounding success, raising over £16,000 for the charity. The event also served as a poignant tribute to Steve Pye, a passionate golfer who passed away in 2023 after battling Parkinson's.

In honor of Steve, a separate golf day was organized by his longtime friend, Ben Beaugeard. The event, held at Barnham Broom Golf Club, saw participants coming together to celebrate Steve's life and raise funds for Parkinson's UK.

Mr. Beaugeard, who fondly remembers Steve introducing him to golf, spoke about the event's significance, saying, "The idea of a golf day came naturally, as golf was a significant part of Steve’s life." He added, "We also saw it as an opportunity to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK, which had been a source of support for Steve and his family."

Both the "Walk for Parkinson's" and the golf day showcased the power of community, bringing people together to remember loved ones, raise awareness for Parkinson's, and support vital research efforts. They served as powerful reminders that even in the face of adversity, hope and camaraderie can prevail.
