Trans Actress Makes Emmy History

Nava Mau, star of the Netflix limited series "Baby Reindeer," has achieved a historic Emmy nomination. Mau was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, becoming the first Latina transgender actress nominated in this category.

Mau joins her co-star Jessica Gunning, as well as Dakota Fanning (Ripley), Lily Gladstone (Under the Bridge), Aja Naomi King (Lessons in Chemistry), Diane Lane (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans), and Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country) in the competitive category.

"Baby Reindeer" tells the unsettling story of Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian played by Richard Gadd, who encounters Martha, a dangerous stalker played by Gunning. Mau portrays Teri, Donny's transgender girlfriend, who becomes entangled in the escalating drama.

Mau, who previously starred in the Max comedy "Generation," expressed her deep connection to the role. She shared that the script resonated with her deeply, allowing her to process long-held emotions. "I had no idea that I internalized so much anger and that I shut it down," she said at an FYC event. "As a trans woman, as a Latina woman, I have had to do that in order to survive… It was so difficult and challenging, honestly, to play a character who felt so entitled to her own emotions."

The series itself had a successful Emmy morning, receiving 11 nominations in total, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.

The 76th Emmy Awards will be held on September 15th, live on ABC from the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live. The ceremony will be available to stream on Hulu the following day.
