The Umbrella Academy: Love Triangle Shocks Fans in Final Season

The Umbrella Academy, known for its chaotic blend of family drama and world-saving escapades, has always featured a dash of romance. But season four throws a surprising twist into the mix, leaving fans stunned.

Warning: Spoilers for season four ahead.

After six years in a new timeline, married couple Diego and Lila face marital troubles. Despite their three children, something feels amiss in their relationship. Enter Five, Diego's brother, who, along with Lila, becomes entangled in a time-travel mishap, leaving them stranded for seven years. In this time, an unexpected romance blossoms between Lila and Five.

"You're not expecting it first," Aidan Gallagher, who plays Five, reveals to Yahoo UK. "But then I view it through the analogy of magnets, like Lila and Five are very much the same thing, they sort of repel each other because of that." He attributes the success of this surprising plotline to the writing team and Ritu Arya, who portrays Lila. "They've sort of got a competitive nature, but then given the right context it flips and it makes a lot of sense."

David Castañeda, who plays Diego, confirms that the love triangle was part of the plan from the beginning. "Steven [DeKnight, showrunner] had told me that there was going to be a little bit of triangle dosage," he shares, adding that working with Arya is always a pleasure. "She's always open, wherever I want to go she goes, wherever she wants to go I go. There's a comfort level of taking it to certain spaces that sometimes with other actors you might have to ask..."

Arya relishes the opportunity to explore new dimensions of Lila this season. "Lila, in particular, has quite a raw and vulnerable journey," she reflects. "It was amazing getting to play at this time with the added depths of being a mother and having marriage. She's still got her core mischievous side, but I've loved playing her this season."

Gallagher also reflects on his character's development and the surprising turn of events. "I thought it was kind of charming to see Aidan step into this romantic lead as he was coming of age," he says. "When we first got to work with him I remember he was 14 when he's making that peanut butter sandwich in the kitchen. He was such a kid, and I still remember that day when we were doing that scene."

Justin H. Min, who plays Ben, chimes in with his own observation. "I forget how young he looked until I randomly see some clips from season one."

To which Castañeda playfully jokes: "He was a baby, he was a child, and now he's a dawg."

The Umbrella Academy's final season is available to stream now on Netflix.
