The Spread Eagle pub in Bromley Cross has a new landlord, Quinton Cramond, who is bringing a fresh approach to the historic establishment. Having only taken over the reins eleven days prior to our conversation, Quinton was already brimming with enthusiasm for his new venture.
"The pub is over 100 years old," explained Quinton, "built during the 19th century, and has always been a central part of the village. It used to be just the main room as you walk in, the rest was terraced housing. All the infrastructure you see, the arches and beams, mark the boundaries where the houses used to be."
A key change Quinton has introduced is the addition of a restaurant, a service he's passionate about. "I wanted to bring food here, it's what I do," he said. "We have a quaint little pub dining experience, with a really popular Sunday roast. We also offer swinging kebabs â three different types â as well as traditional dishes like our homemade cheese and onion pie."
For those who prefer al fresco dining, there's a beer garden at the back, a sun trap that can accommodate 30-40 guests. The most popular drink amongst patrons? Cruzcampo.
The Spread Eagle boasts a vibrant entertainment line-up, with Thursday quiz nights, open mic sessions, and live music performances. A local singer, Charlie, will be gracing the stage on Saturday, 17th August. Sports fans can enjoy Sky and TNT channels, while a darts board and pool table cater to those who prefer a more relaxed pastime.
Quinton admits the biggest challenge he's facing is the sheer volume of work. "I'm currently working from 8am to half past midnight, seven days a week," he confessed. "But running a pub is not just a job, it's a way of life. That's what I've realised in the last eleven days."
Despite the long hours, Quinton is clearly enjoying his new role. "The best thing is getting to meet new people, learning about their lives, their stories. It's an interesting environment. I've never worked behind a bar before, and the first week I was on the bar until we got the kitchen set up. It's good."
So far, Quinton hasn't encountered anything he'd consider the 'worst' part of the job. His most memorable moment? "Opening the pub and realising I own my own business, that was amazing."
When asked if he had anything else to add, Quinton simply smiled and said, "I think we've covered it." With his infectious energy and commitment to creating a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere, Quinton is set to make The Spread Eagle a thriving hub for the community of Bromley Cross.
