Surf's Up! Essential Gear for Beginners and Pros

Surfing is no longer just for Californian cool kids or tropical island dwellers. Since appearing at the Tokyo Games in 2021, the sport has experienced a surge in popularity among Brits.

With surfing set to feature again at the 2024 Paris Games, held in the surfing haven of Teahupo'o, Tahiti, the sport's appeal continues to grow.

The Olympic effect has seen a dramatic increase in Brits hitting the waves. This is reflected in the boom in surfing holidays, with retreats offering the chance to try riding the waves as part of a group. Cornwall, a popular surfing destination, sees over 5 million visitors annually, according to figures from the University of Exeter. The Wave, an inland surf simulator in Bristol, opened in 2019, allowing landlocked Brits to experience the thrill of surfing. "We currently welcome around 70,000 individual surfers a year, but I expect to see an increased appetite for people wanting to learn to surf on the back of the Games this year," says Nick Hounsfield, founder of The Wave and Surf England director.

The appeal of surfing lies in its sense of freedom, the physical benefits it offers, and the thrill of learning a new skill. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, investing in the right gear is essential for a safe and enjoyable surfing experience.

So, which surf brands should you be looking at?

Lindsey Holland, founder of Marnie Rays, a retreat that helps newbies learn to surf in locations ranging from Cornwall to Portugal and Bali, shares her insights on the best gear for cold water surfing. "Finisterre's back zip wetsuit is my favourite - comfy, supportive and warm! To and from the beach, I'm wearing a tracksuit and a hoodie, and I always pack an over-the-head hooded towel for ease of getting dry." For spring and summer conditions, a 3/2mm wetsuit will keep you warm in temperatures between 15 to 20°C.

A brief history lesson: Jack O’Neill invented the neoprene wetsuit in 1952, while Rip Curl introduced innovations in 1969 that revolutionized wetsuit production, making surfing a year-round pursuit even in colder climates.

For warm water conditions in surfing hotspots like Indonesia or Tahiti, you can opt for more conventional swimwear. However, keep in mind the agility required for surfing and the force of waves pulling on your suit. Look for hardwearing fabrics and sun protection, particularly if you're heading out for a long session. A long-sleeve rash vest will help you stay in the water longer in the heat without burning or damaging your skin.

Holland suggests a swim set "with no underwire, always soft, I like a crop top as it’s more secure." She also packs "a cap, a shirt as a cover-up and a spare bikini in my bag" for beach and travel wear.

Protecting your skin in the sun: Choosing the right sunscreen for surfing is crucial. Dr Anjali Mahto, a Consultant Dermatologist, advises, "When selecting a sunscreen for extended water sports, ensure it is labelled as 'water-resistant' or 'very water-resistant', offering protection for 60 to 80 minutes in water."

"Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen to shield against both UVA and UVB rays, with a minimum SPF of 30. Consider a physical sunscreen containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which tends to be more stable in water," she adds. "Look for formulations designed for sports, which often resist sweat and have a non-greasy texture. Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or towel drying, regardless of the SPF rating."
