Laura Whitmore, former host of Love Island, has released a statement regarding the ongoing BBC investigation into the conduct of professional dancers on Strictly Come Dancing. The statement, published on her social media, addresses her own experiences on the show with professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, and her role in supporting other individuals who have made similar allegations.
Whitmore stated that she had initially raised concerns about inappropriate behaviour by Pernice back in 2016, but felt her experience was isolated. However, she has since learned that other individuals have experienced similar behaviour.
"I was asked to speak to the BBC along with six people that I know of," Whitmore wrote, "about inappropriate behaviour they experienced similar to mine with the same individual." She emphasised that she was not looking for retribution but sought acknowledgment and a guarantee that such behaviour would not be repeated.
Whitmore clarified that she had not made a formal complaint but was "providing evidence of my experience to support the investigation." She also addressed the misinformation circulating in the press and the online abuse faced by those who have come forward, including actress Amanda Abbington.
"Victim blaming must stop or we will never get better," she wrote. "I've tried to speak up in the correct way. I know the BBC and all outlets continue to do their best to be better, but for that to happen, we must speak up."
Pernice's representatives have released a statement denying any allegations of threatening or abusive behaviour and stating their full cooperation with the BBC investigation. They have urged the public to wait for the review's conclusion and not to engage with unsubstantiated claims.
The BBC is conducting a thorough review of the allegations, aiming to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all participants on Strictly Come Dancing. The investigation's findings and any subsequent actions taken will be made public upon completion.
