Strictly Scandal: Amanda Abbington Accuses Giovanni Pernice of Abuse

Actress Amanda Abbington has spoken out against her former *Strictly Come Dancing

partner Giovanni Pernice, alleging abusive, cruel and mean behavior during their time together.

Abbington, known for her role in *Sherlock*, withdrew from the show after just five weeks, citing inappropriate behavior from Pernice. She has now revealed that she filed a formal complaint with the BBC and was later diagnosed with PTSD as a result of her experience.

In an exclusive interview with *The Sun on Sunday*, Abbington detailed her allegations, stating that she found Pernice’s behavior “unnecessary, abusive, cruel and mean.” She emphasized that she couldn’t ignore the possibility of future contestants being subjected to similar treatment and felt a responsibility to speak out.

Abbington further explained, "I know what happened in that room, it's on video and I have no problem with anyone seeing that. It's a duty of care that is needed. Rehearsal rooms should be a safe space, there is a duty of care and kindness, and that courtesy wasn’t extended to me on this job.”

She also expressed her frustration that the BBC appeared to have been aware of Pernice's behavior for years, with multiple complaints being made to producers. “I know the BBC knew about Giovanni’s behaviour for years, people had complained about him and flagged his behaviour to producers in the past and nothing was done. It wasn’t an isolated experience with me," she said.

Adding to the controversy, an anonymous BBC source confirmed that an executive had described Pernice's behavior towards Abbington as “unacceptable and shocking” after reviewing footage from rehearsals. This revelation follows previous accusations of inappropriate behavior from Pernice directed at other stars, including Faye Tozer, Richie Anderson, and Laura Whitmore.

Whitmore has claimed that Pernice left her in tears daily during their 2016 partnership, stating she felt “broken, mentally and physically” as a result. These allegations have sparked a wider debate about the culture on the set of *Strictly Come Dancing*.

The BBC has launched an internal investigation into the allegations, which is set to conclude next week. The investigation has also been informed of comments made by judge Anton Du Beke, raising concerns about his own behavior towards his former dance partner Laila Rouass in 2009.

In response to the accusations, Pernice’s spokesperson has denied any abusive or threatening behavior, stating that he has provided evidence to the investigation and is confident of clearing his name.

The BBC has since announced changes to its procedures, including chaperoning stars during rehearsals and hiring welfare producers to address concerns about working conditions.

This scandal has cast a shadow over the 20th anniversary of *Strictly Come Dancing*, raising questions about the BBC’s commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for its performers. As the investigation comes to a close, the public awaits the findings and any potential consequences for those involved.
