Steps Star 'H' Wows MasterChef Judges with Welsh Flatbreads

Ian "H" Watkins, formerly of the pop group Steps, has impressed the judges on Celebrity MasterChef with his delicious Welsh flatbreads, following in the footsteps of last year's Welsh winner Wynne Evans.

Watkins, who is currently competing on the BBC One cooking show, sailed through to the second round, wowing judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace with his flatbreads featuring Welsh beef and a Welsh feta cheese.

In a "food van" challenge, celebrities including Craig Doyle, Charlotte Crosby, and Edith Brown were tasked with creating a street food offering. Watkins opted for his signature flatbreads, explaining: "I am celebrating all things Welsh with my food truck. I love real Welsh produce so I love Welsh beef. I am cooking Welsh chilli beef-filled flatbreads and also Welsh 'feta'-filled flatbreads."

His food truck, aptly named "Our Daddy's Flatbreads of Heaven" after the famous Welsh hymn "Bread of Heaven" (with a little help from his children), proved a hit with the judges.

Following the successful cooking demonstration, Gregg Wallace remarked: "They are really, really good. They would sell. That chilli beef is really quite hot… you need the yoghurt dip. I am not complaining – I'd eat every mouthful."

John Torode added: "I really like them – they are moreish, they are delicious. The flavour of spinach and feta, it is sort of like a Greek pastry."

Watkins' impressive performance on Celebrity MasterChef follows earlier successes in the competition. He previously impressed the judges during a team challenge alongside Craig Doyle and shone while preparing paella in a professional restaurant setting.

Unfortunately, Charlotte Crosby did not fare as well in the gnocchi challenge and was eliminated from the competition.

Celebrity MasterChef continues on BBC One at 8pm on Thursday, August 15.
