London's iconic St John restaurant is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a nostalgic trip back to 1994 â including the prices.
The restaurant, which opened its doors in October 1994 at the much-loved Smithfield site, will be serving up its most famous dishes at 1994 prices from 9th to 27th September. This is a rare chance to experience St John as it was in its early days, savouring classics like roast bone marrow with parsley salad, crispy fried pig tail, and eel, bacon and mash. Even the long-retired apricots on toast will be making a comeback. The menu will change twice daily, offering a constant rotation of St John's signature delights.
To add to the nostalgia, there will be commemorative 1994 merchandise available, offering a tangible reminder of this special anniversary.
Fergus Henderson and Trevor Gulliver, the founders of St John, have seen their restaurant grow from a single smokehouse by Smithfield Market to a culinary empire that includes St John Bread and Wine in Spitalfields, a restaurant in Marylebone, and bakeries in Covent Garden and Borough. Though a St John hotel in Chinatown was a brief venture, the restaurant has left an enduring mark on London's dining scene.
Reflecting on the anniversary, Trevor Gulliver expressed: "We are going to enjoy this little moment with those close by that really matter and those that we need to say a big thank you to. They are our St John folk and our St John customers across the years. I hope that we've found a good solution â both are our future and may the good ship St John sail on, always the same but never the same... Fergus and I are the lucky ones, and we might just have a little lunch somewhere along with a glass of a very good burgundy, raising that toast to our many friends across the years."
Reservations for the special menu, available weekdays only, open at 10am on 22nd August through OpenTable. The commemorative merch will be available mid-September on the St John website. While the food will be priced as it was in 1994, drinks will unfortunately reflect the current year's prices.
This unique opportunity to revisit a pivotal moment in St John's history is sure to be a popular one. So, book your table, indulge in a slice of culinary history, and celebrate the enduring legacy of this London institution.
