Shang-Chi 2: Simu Liu Confirms Sequel is "Definitely Happening"
Canadian actor Simu Liu, who made history as the first Asian actor to play a Marvel superhero in "Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings," has confirmed that a sequel is in the works.
Fans had been anxiously awaiting news of a follow-up to the 2021 blockbuster, which featured Hong Kong acting legend Tony Leung as Liu's father and actress Awkwafina as his friend. While Marvel had remained tight-lipped about the project, Liu has put those concerns to rest.
"A lot of it is above my pay grade, but it's definitely happening," Liu told the Press Trust of India (PTI) in a recent interview. "So just very excited to kind of work on it and it's going to be amazing. I really can't say anything beyond that."
Liu, who is currently starring alongside Awkwafina in the comedy "Jackpot!", revealed that his biggest career moment was receiving the call from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige offering him the role of Shang-Chi.
"Probably the main one that I could think of is getting the call from Kevin Feige â God, it was like five years ago now â that I was going to play Shang-Chi," Liu shared. "If you talk about one moment and one decision that's made in one's life that completely changes the trajectory of an entire career, an entire life, not only my life but the lives of my friends, my family, I think that (call) is like winning the lottery 10 times over."
"Jackpot!", directed by Paul Feig of "Bridesmaids" and "Last Christmas" fame, follows Awkwafina's character Katie, a struggling actor in a near-future California. After winning the lottery, Katie becomes the target of assassins due to a rule that allows anyone who kills her to claim her winnings. Liu plays Louis Lewis, a friend who befriends Katie alongside John Cena's character Noel, only to ultimately betray them both.
While details about "Shang-Chi 2" are still under wraps, Liu's confirmation is sure to excite fans eager to see what adventures await the titular superhero.
