Omega Breaks has expanded its astronomy-themed travel programme with a new five-day "Scotland Dark Skies & Northern Lights" tour. Launching in February 2025, this exciting break offers a unique opportunity to witness the Aurora Borealis from a prime viewing location in the UK.
Scotland, with its long periods of darkness and frequent clear nights, is an ideal destination for stargazing. Combined with minimal light pollution and exceptional viewing areas, it offers one of the best chances in the UK to catch sight of the elusive Northern Lights.
This tour is led by renowned astronomer Peter Lawrence, familiar to audiences of the BBC's "The Sky at Night". Throughout the trip, Lawrence will provide insightful presentations on the night sky, offering advice on witnessing the aurora and mastering the art of capturing its ethereal beauty through photography.
Based in Aberdeen, the itinerary includes evenings at Knockburn Loch, a location known for its dark skies. Guests will have the chance to marvel at the dancing lights of the aurora while Lawrence shares his expertise and insights, ensuring an unforgettable experience.
The tour also allows time to explore Aberdeen, a historic city rich in culture and charm. Excursions to Stonehaven and Ballater are included, providing a glimpse into the scenic beauty of the Scottish countryside.
Claire Dutton, trade sales manager for Omega Breaks, commented: "We are thrilled to introduce this UK short break to our astronomy programme, offering a fantastic opportunity to experience the Northern Lights closer to home. It complements our existing range of Northern Lights evenings flights, Iceland trips, and eclipse adventures."
She added: "Scientists predict an increase in UK sightings of the aurora over the next year, making it a prime time to witness this spectacle. With solar activity at its peak, we could witness some of the most spectacular displays in over a decade."
The five-day tour departs on 27 February 2025, priced from £949 per person, including return flights to Aberdeen from Gatwick or Heathrow. The price includes transfers, four nights' accommodation at the Leonard Hotel in Aberdeen with breakfast and dinner, two nights of aurora viewing at Knockburn Loch with presentations by Peter Lawrence and refreshments, excursions to Stonehaven and Ballater, free time in Aberdeen, and a farewell gathering with Lawrence at the hotel. The price is based on two people sharing a room. (Prices from Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham or Norwich airports start at £999 per person).
