Saint Lucian Takes Crown at Prestigious Caribbean Pageant After 39-Year Drought

Shan Julien, representing Saint Lucia, has been crowned Miss Jaycees 2024, marking a historic victory for the island nation after a 39-year absence from the top spot. The prestigious pageant, held in Antigua and Barbuda last weekend, is a celebrated showcase of Caribbean beauty and talent.

The Jaycees Queen Pageant, now in its 61st year, is a highlight of Antigua's carnival celebrations. This year's competition featured 11 delegates from across the region, including Dominica, Antigua & Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Grenada, the United States Virgin Islands, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts & Nevis, Guadeloupe, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, and Haiti.

Under the theme "Beauty Unbroken," the contestants first showcased their national and cultural heritage in vibrant costumes. The competition then progressed through interview, swimwear, talent, and evening wear segments, highlighting the contestants' individual talents and the resilience of Caribbean women.

Julien's performance captivated the audience, securing her the coveted title alongside numerous category awards including Most True to Theme, Best Talent, Best Modelling in Evening Wear, and Best Evening Wear.

In interviews with local media, Julien expressed her surprise and gratitude, noting that the experience had surpassed her expectations.

Minister for Culture and Creative Industries, Dr Ernest Hilaire, lauded Julien's achievement, stating: "Shan Lucien, our 2024 National Carnival Queen, has given us every reason to be a 'damn proud Lucian!' A history maker, Shan captured the 2024 Miss Jaycees crown—a feat last achieved in 1985! I hope this will inspire young ladies across the country and the region."

Julien's mother, Priscilla Lucien, echoed the sentiments of pride and joy, highlighting her daughter's determination and resilience: "You have made Saint Lucia proud."

The competition also recognised other outstanding performances, with Miss Guadeloupe Kaena Rangasamy winning Miss Photogenic, Miss Grenada Amonai Francis taking Best Interview, and Miss Antigua Desrie Markham being awarded Best Swimwear.

First Runner-up: Desrie Markham (Antigua & Barbuda)

Second Runner-up: Amonai Francis (Grenada)
