Royal Rift: Kate Middleton's Heartbreak Before the Wedding

A new book has revealed a tumultuous chapter in the love story of Prince William and Kate Middleton, revealing a near-split before their royal wedding. Despite their long-standing relationship, the couple faced a difficult period in 2006-2007, with a last-minute change of plans by Prince William causing significant distress for his then-girlfriend.

The tradition of the royal family celebrating Christmas at Sandringham meant Kate was unable to join William for the festive period before their marriage. This separation, however, was compounded by William's sudden cancellation of their planned New Year's celebrations.

Royal author Katie Nicholl, in her 2011 book "The Making of a Royal Romance", details how William had initially promised to spend New Year's with Kate's family. However, he subsequently changed his mind, opting to stay with his own family instead. The decision was communicated to Kate on Boxing Day via phone, leaving her deeply disappointed.

Nicholl reports that William had been "having second thoughts" and had sought advice from his father, Prince Charles, and grandmother, the Queen, about his future with Kate. Both reportedly urged him not to rush into anything, prompting William to re-evaluate their relationship.

The fallout from this decision resulted in a brief separation between the couple in early 2007, a development that reportedly caused dismay among royal circles, particularly Queen Elizabeth. Despite the split, the couple were spotted kissing at a military party just a few days later, demonstrating the strength of their bond.

Their engagement was announced in 2010, with their wedding taking place in April 2011.

Beyond the New Year's debacle, the book also sheds light on another challenge faced by Kate during their courtship – the cruel nickname bestowed upon her by some of William's friends.

Nicholl reports that Kate, who met William while they were both university students, was often mocked for her mother, Carole Middleton's, former career as a flight attendant.

William's friends, displaying a degree of social snobbery, would reportedly refer to Kate as "Doors to Manual", a derogatory term referencing her mother's working-class background.

While the nickname undoubtedly stung, Kate remained composed and resilient, refusing to rise to the provocation. A royal aide, quoted in the Sunday Times Magazine, described Kate's strength of character, highlighting her ability to rise above such unkindness.

Despite the difficulties they faced, Prince William and Kate Middleton ultimately navigated these challenges and forged a strong, lasting relationship. The revelation of these past struggles provides a glimpse into the couple's personal journey, highlighting the resilience and determination that have helped them build a strong foundation for their marriage and public life.
