"Rings of Power" Star Addresses Celeborn's Absence in Season 1

The absence of Celeborn, a significant figure in Tolkien's lore, from the first season of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" left many fans questioning his whereabouts. Now, Morfydd Clark, who plays Galadriel, has shed light on his absence, confirming his fate and offering hope for his return.

In the first season, Galadriel explains that Celeborn, her beloved, was lost to war. She recalls their initial meeting, a time of peace and promise, before conflict tore them apart. “The prospect of conflict seemed ‘so very far away’ when they met ‘in a glade of flowers’,” she says, “but Celeborn ultimately went to fight and she ‘never saw him again after that’”.

Addressing Celeborn's absence directly, Clark told Dexerto, “Well, we know Celeborn is out there. We can tell Galadriel is feeling a lot of pain for not being with Celeborn, and that this was a terrible loss to her, and I hope that they shall be reunited.”

The show's ambitious five-season plan suggests that Celeborn's role in the narrative is far from over. The writers are likely to weave him back into the story, potentially reuniting him with Galadriel in the future.

Season 1 of "The Rings of Power" garnered mixed reactions, with some critics pointing towards the pacing and perceived deviations from canon, including Celeborn's absence. However, the showrunners, JD Payne and Patrick McKay, defended their approach in an interview with RadioTimes.com.

They explained that season 1 laid the groundwork for the grander narrative, stating, “Now that we’ve set the table, we can play, and we’re leading right into one of these major pieces of literature from the lore, which is the story of the creation of the Rings of Power, Sauron's rise, his deception of the Elven Smiths of Eregion, led by Celebrimbor, the Elven Da Vinci – that is the core of this season.”

They further elaborated on the significance of this season, saying, "It is Middle-earth entering the nuclear age, and how these new powers are going to affect everyone who carries them, every being and nation that's in control of them, and how that's going to change the world at large."

The showrunners are confident that season 2 will deliver a more satisfying experience for fans, emphasizing that they are "really feasting on Tolkien."

"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" season 2 premieres on Thursday 29th August 2024 on Prime Video.
