Punch: Mother's Story of Forgiveness Hits West End

A powerful play exploring forgiveness and redemption will move to London's West End, bringing a poignant story of a mother's unwavering compassion to a wider audience.

"Punch," written by Nottinghamshire playwright James Graham, will transfer to the Young Vic Theatre in March 2025. The play is inspired by the true story of James Hodgkinson, who tragically died in 2011 in Nottingham after being punched during a visit to a cricket match. The incident, deemed a "stupid mistake," led to the manslaughter conviction of Jacob Dunne.

In a remarkable turn of events, Dunne, after serving his sentence, met with Mr. Hodgkinson's parents and expressed remorse for his actions. He later pursued criminology studies at university, using his experience to become a vocal advocate against violence.

The play's narrative centers around the relationship between Dunne and Joan Scourfield, Mr. Hodgkinson's mother, who supported Dunne's rehabilitation and ultimately became a powerful voice for compassion and forgiveness.

Graham, drawing inspiration from Dunne's autobiography "Right from Wrong," crafted a play that transcends the boundaries of a tragedy, delving into the complexities of human behavior and the transformative power of empathy.

"This play and the incredible story it tells could not mean more to me," Graham shared. "It feels like one of the most moving and urgent real-life dramas I’ve had the honour of translating to the stage. I’ve never not watched without ugly crying and can’t wait to share it with a wider audience."

"Punch" originally premiered at the Nottingham Playhouse in May, captivating audiences with its raw and emotional portrayal of a tragic event and its aftermath. The play's success sparked widespread interest, prompting its move to the West End, where it is set to run from March 1st to April 12th.

Director Adam Penford expressed his enthusiasm about bringing the play to the Young Vic, noting its profound impact in Nottingham. He emphasized that "Punch" "asks important questions about what it means to be human and what kind of society we want to live in."

The original cast members, including Alec Boaden, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Tony Hirst, Shalisha James-Davis, Emma Pallant, and David Shields, will reprise their roles, ensuring the powerful performances that resonated with audiences in Nottingham will continue to captivate London theatergoers.
