Portsmouth Braces for Victorious Festival Influx

Thousands are expected to descend upon Portsmouth this weekend for the annual Victorious Festival, bringing a much-needed boost to local businesses. The four-day event, taking place on The Common and Castle Field in Southsea, has become a staple of the city's calendar since its inception in 2014.

Organisers have lauded the festival's impact on the local economy, estimating the financial benefit to be close to £20 million in 2023 alone.

"Victorious plays a very important role in the local economy," said Andy Marsh, co-founder of the festival. "We put together the best lineup we can, with something for everyone." Marsh highlighted the festival's local roots, noting that "our data shows over 50% come from off the island, from all round the country and abroad as well."

Local businesses are gearing up for the influx of visitors, anticipating increased footfall and a surge in sales. Mehmet Basbaydar, owner of the Farm Kitchen and Farm Bakery, believes Victorious is "the best time of the year for local businesses." He predicts the bakery will be "packed" for the four days of the festival, with over 60,000 people expected to visit the city from outside of Portsmouth.

Similarly, Jane Green, who works at the Sainsbury's on Palmerston Road, confirmed that they have to "order extra everything" in preparation for the festival, which translates to "a bit of a profit on those days."

While the festival brings a boon to many businesses, some businesses, like Sopranos, an Italian restaurant on Palmerston Road, face a mixed bag. "It's not a negative impact on us but not necessarily a positive one," explained Sandy Peters, co-owner. He highlighted the challenges of parking, which is "absolutely impossible" during the festival, and the chaotic traffic during the festival's 11pm closing.

Despite the challenges, the atmosphere and economic benefits of the festival are undeniable, creating a bustling atmosphere across the city. As the event kicks off, Portsmouth prepares for a weekend filled with music, entertainment, and a much-needed injection of economic activity.
