Pixar's "Elio": New Directors, Story Twists, and Cast Changes

Pixar's upcoming space adventure, "Elio," has undergone a series of significant changes since its announcement at D23 in 2022. The film, originally helmed by Adrian Molina, co-writer and co-director of "Coco," is now being directed by a duo: Domee Shi, director of "Turning Red," and Madeline Sharafian, director of the 2020 short film "Burrow."

In a recent interview with TheWrap, Pixar's chief creative officer, Pete Docter, shed light on the journey of "Elio" and the reasons behind the directorial shift. Molina, Docter confirmed, remains at Pixar and has been assigned to a "priority project" that the studio is not yet ready to disclose. Despite this change, Docter expressed enthusiasm for both Molina and the new project.

The search for new directors led them to Shi and Sharafian, a pairing that Docter describes as a "fantastic job." This marks the first time Pixar has employed two directors on a single film, a departure from the traditional approach of a main director and a co-director. Docter highlights the respect and synergy between Shi and Sharafian as key to the success of this unique dynamic.

The film follows the story of young Elio, voiced by Yonas Kibreab, who finds himself transported to a spaceship teeming with alien life. Misidentified as Earth's ambassador, Elio must find a way to navigate the unfamiliar environment while ensuring his survival.

While the film's original release date of 1 March 2024 has been pushed back to 13 June 2025, Docter attributes this delay primarily to the recent actors' strike. He reassures fans that the film's core design elements, including the alien characters featured in the first trailer, remain unchanged.

Docter also reveals that the film's new direction has resulted in a deeper exploration of Elio's character. He highlights the significant discoveries Shi and Sharafian have made, particularly in shaping Elio's journey towards the film's second act.

Another notable change concerns the film's cast. America Ferrera, originally slated to voice Elio's mother, has stepped aside due to scheduling conflicts. The role has now been filled by Zoe Saldaña, who will portray Elio's aunt. Saldaña appeared onstage at the D23 presentation, showcasing her involvement in the project.

Docter further emphasizes the thematic connection between "Elio" and Pixar's recent hit "Inside Out 2." Both films, he suggests, delve into the universal experience of feeling isolated within a bustling world. "Elio," he believes, will resonate with audiences grappling with similar feelings, offering a hopeful message about connection and belonging.
