Oasis Reunion: Is a Definitely Maybe Comeback on the Cards?
Oasis fans are on tenterhooks once again as rumours of a reunion swirl, fuelled by the typically playful pronouncements of former frontman Liam Gallagher.
A report in the Sunday Times over the weekend suggested that the iconic band are planning a full-blown reunion in 2025, including headline performances in Manchester and London. This comes amidst a flurry of speculation surrounding a potential reconciliation between Liam and his elder brother and ex-bandmate, Noel.
The past year has seen a noticeable thaw in the long-standing feud between the Gallagher brothers. Last week, Noel surprised fans by showering Liam with compliments during an interview with John Robb at Manchesterâs Sifters Records.
âItâs the delivery or the tone of his voice and the attitude,â Noel remarked about Liamâs delivery on classics like âSlide Awayâ, âCigarettes and Alcoholâ, and âRock âNâ Roll Starâ. He went on to compare Liamâs vocal style to âa shot of tequilaâ, contrasting it with his own, which he likened to âhalf a Guinnessâ. âLiamâs is 10 shots of tequila on a Friday night,â he quipped.
The Sunday Times claims that an announcement could be made as early as this week, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Oasisâ debut album, *Definitely Maybe*. Social media has been abuzz with anticipation, with fans eagerly discussing the rumours ahead of Liamâs headline performance at Reading Festival.
âThis is what the UK needs to hear right now,â one fan wrote, adding, âIf true, what an immense, welcome, and needed comeback.â Another expressed their excitement: âThis is the first moment in 15 years when I actually think itâs gonna happen.â
The prospect of an Oasis reunion has sparked a range of reactions, from hopeful to humorous. âIf we can do this, we can solve climate change,â one fan joked, while another declared, âIf Oasis reunite, I will fly myself, my wife and our baby across the globe to Manchester and spend all our savings.â
Liam has been playfully responding to fansâ inquiries about the reunion. When asked if the rumours were true, he replied, âHonest to me Iâve not heard a peep.â However, when pressed for a timeline for an announcement, he quipped, âNext Friday.â
As fans voiced concerns about his cryptic responses, Liam reassured them: âItâs you lot that are being silly buggers Iâm just trying to get to the other side as safe and sound as possible.â He even took a jab at a sceptic who dismissed Manchester's Heaton Park as a âterrible venue for concertsâ, responding: âSee you down the front you big fanny.â
Earlier this month, Liamâs son Gene told The Times that his dad is open to a reunion, echoing sentiments Liam has expressed in recent years. âI get the feeling my dad wants it,â he said. âLetâs hope it happens. Itâs easier to speak about after a couple of pints.â
Gene added that while he has ânothing to do withâ the reunion, he would âlove itâ but itâs âso beyond my control.â He also revealed that his fatherâs all-time favourite Oasis song is âWonderwallâ, despite his uncle Noel regularly performing the track solo.
Despite their fathersâ long-running feud, Gene is close friends with Noelâs daughter Anaïs. Although they have joked about staging an intervention, Gene believes the brothers are âtoo smart for thatâ.
In an interview last year, Noel â who had previously dismissed the possibility of a reunion â joked that he would have to see âwhat everyoneâs hair was looking likeâ. âMy hair was a bit thicker in Oasis,â he said, adding that a reunion would likely involve him, Liam, and âa load of fit f***ing birdsâ.
The Independent has reached out to Liam and Noelâs representatives for comment. As the 30th anniversary of *Definitely Maybe
approaches, the anticipation for an official announcement continues to build. Whether Oasis will indeed reunite remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the world is watching.
