Netflix Unveils 'Famous Last Words': A Post-Mortem Interview Show

Netflix is venturing into uncharted territory with "Famous Last Words," a unique documentary series format that delves into the final thoughts of cultural icons. This innovative show features secret, intimate interviews, filmed by the subjects themselves, which remain unseen until after their passing.

The series will be produced by Emmy-winning writer and producer Brad Falchuk, under his Teley-Vision banner, which has a multi-year agreement with Netflix. Banijay Entertainment's BSNA and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts are also involved, with the latter providing a permanent home for the interviews in its library.

"Famous Last Words" is an adaptation of the Danish format "Det Sidste Ord" ("The Last Word"), which has garnered critical acclaim for its sensitive approach to capturing the life reflections of renowned figures. The original series, hosted by Mikael Bertelsen, features interviews conducted at the Royal Danish Library, where the footage remains until the subject's death. The edited interviews are then broadcast, with around six already aired in Denmark.

The American version will follow a similar format, focusing on "notable personalities who have spent their lives making significant contributions to humanity and culture." The identities of the guests and the air dates of the episodes will only be revealed after their passing. The interviews will be conducted in a private setting with only the interviewee and interviewer present. For added privacy, the filming will be handled by remotely operated cameras. Netflix emphasises that the series aims to capture "the heartfelt reflections of luminaries," creating "a time capsule containing intimate conversations" and offering a safe space for the guests, knowing their interviews will remain confidential until after their passing.
