"National Treasure 3" Plot & Cast Hints After 17 Years of Development

The long-awaited third instalment of the "National Treasure" franchise is edging closer to reality, with screenwriter Ted Elliot revealing tantalising details about the upcoming film. Following the success of the 2004 original, which introduced Nicolas Cage's treasure hunter, Benjamin Gates, and its 2007 sequel, "National Treasure 3" has been in development limbo for years, despite the willingness of key cast and crew members to return, including director Jon Turteltaub.

In a recent interview on the "National Treasure Hunt" podcast, Elliot shared some exciting insights into the project. While the identity of the treasure remains a closely guarded secret, he confirmed that the first draft of the script is complete, although revisions are still underway. As for who we can expect to see on screen, Elliot promises the return of familiar faces beyond the core trio of Ben, Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger), and Riley Poole (Justin Bartha), alongside multiple antagonists.

Regarding Riley's character development, Elliot highlighted his progression from the uninformed audience member in the first film to a cryptohistory expert in the second. This evolving knowledge is set to play a key role in "National Treasure 3," with Elliot suggesting a change in the dynamic between Ben and Riley that will be "enjoyable" for both actors.

Elliot also confirmed that the Disney+ series "National Treasure: Edge of History" will be considered canon for the film. This means, however, that the character of Agent Sadusky, played by Harvey Keitel, will not be returning, as he met his demise in the series. He added that the FBI's role in the film will differ from their portrayal in the previous two movies, hinting at a fresh perspective on law enforcement's involvement in the treasure hunt.

While the President's Book and its mysterious page 47 were teased in "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," their significance remains unclear. Elliot's comments, however, don't rule out their potential role in the third film, suggesting that page 47 may hold the key to a new American mystery or treasure yet to be discovered.

Elliot's comments on the cast also suggest a welcome return for other familiar faces. While Cage, Kruger, and Bartha are expected to reprise their roles, the mention of "other familiar faces" could mean we'll see Jon Voight, Helen Mirren, Bruce Greenwood, and Sean Bean back in the mix.

Although "National Treasure: Edge of History" received mixed reviews and was cancelled after one season, its inclusion in the canon for "National Treasure 3" may indicate a new direction for the franchise. Elliot's comments paint a picture of a film that balances familiar elements with fresh twists, promising a thrilling continuation of the beloved treasure hunting saga.

While a green light for "National Treasure 3" is yet to be officially confirmed, the recent updates and Elliot's enthusiastic comments suggest that this long-awaited sequel is finally on the horizon, ready to captivate audiences with a new adventure.
